Companion Animals Week! Dr. Harvey’s and Azmira Holistic

Still talking about food today, always a companion animal’s favorite subject! First, there’s Dr. Harvey’s, which offers all kinds of cruelty-free alternatives not only for dogs and cats, but also for birds and horses. AWESOME! In addition, Dr. Harvey’s offers herbal supplements to help with our immune systems, our joints, or even separation anxiety.
Some of my personal faves from Dr. Harvey’s:
- Canine Health – The Miracle Dog Food
This pre-mix is comprised of all-natural, human-grade ingredients — six certified organic grains, nine vegetables, and fourteen herbs. No dyes, no preservatives, and no chemicals. Dr. H. also makes a grain-free version, Veg-To-Bowl. For protein, just mix in some baked or steamed tofu to create a well-rounded meal. Or, if it’s a weekday and the schedule is tight, my mom likes to cut up pieces of Smart Deli slices by LightLife, which come in bologna, ham, turkey, and pepperoni. Tonight, we’re having it with some red quinoa mixed in — another great source of protein. The final touch: a little flax oil or olive oil. Delicious! There’s a grain-free version, too.
My brother Otis
- Dr. Harvey’s Sweet Potate’r Chews
This is a great treat sans preservatives, chemicals, artificial flavoring, or dyes. Made of all-natural dehydrated sweet potatoes — my brother Otis and I love ‘em! - Relax and Stress for Dogs: herbal calming aid
This one is for Otis. As he’s gotten older (I’m four, he’s ten), he’s gotten a bit more nervous at times, especially when there are thunderstorms or fireworks. This is a gentle, all-natural supplement to help him de-stress. Sometimes morning meditation with mom just isn’t quite enough to help him reach his zen state. FYI to the kitty guardians: there’s also a cat version available!
My brother Pushkin
Another great line of supplements and homeopathic remedies to check out is Azmira Holistic Animal Care. Our family started using some of the supplements for my brother Pushkin, including their flower essences to help with his jealousy when Mom and Dad first brought me home. It wasn’t long before my big brother warmed up to me, so I guess the Jealousy drops worked pretty well!
Other Azmira faves:
- Yucca Intensive
This herbal extract is an anti-inflammatory that we used to help Pushkin with his arthritis and also his digestive problems. It became an all-natural substitute for a steroid medication, which eliminated his having to cope with nasty side effects. Just a couple of drops in Pushkin’s food was all it took each day to keep my big brother healthier and happier for a long time. - Herbal Calm
This is a good “situational” supplement, meaning it doesn’t require daily use. The capsules are good for stressful situations: Mom used to give it to Pushkin whenever a thunderstorm was coming, and on the Fourth of July before the fireworks started popping up all over the sky. It’s also good during allergy season to help reduce all the licking and scratching. - Tryptopet
This one was for me. I was diagnosed with epilepsy after I was adopted. Tryptopet is a powder supplement that helped me a lot when I was a puppy, so that we were able to keep me on a very low dosage of pheno-barbitol. The tryptophan powder helps regulate brain activity responsible for hyperactivity, aggression, and mood disorders; and it’s a wonderful supplement to seizure elimination protocols. Azmira also makes Phenypet (Phenylalanine), which also can reduce seizure activity.
