“Got the Facts on Milk?” Documentary
A road trip from California to Washington, D.C. by Shira Lane and friends. Destination: the USDA office, to question the publicized benefits of milk and dairy products. Along the way, they stop to ask ordinary people what they think about milk, milk production, and its effects on human health. The responses are often as hilarious as they are thought-provoking.
In the process of this entertaining film (complete with animation, also done by Shira Lane), the documentary debunks the myth of needing calcium from milk for bone strength, points out the plight of farmers who have become like indentured servants to the major players in agribusiness, and highlights animal welfare issues such as the need to keep dairy cows pregnant all the time so they produce milk, the practice of taking away the newborn calves from their mothers, and the fact that the male calves are shipped off to become veal cutlets.
The documentary is appropriate for most ages and is bound to launch some lively discussion afterwards. You can order the DVD on the film’s web site or, for just $5.99, you can stream the film for viewing. Check out the trailer…
